CALIFORNIA / CITY DISCOVERY

Which California city fits your kind of adventure?

Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco share a state but not the same pace or geography. Los Angeles has major hills, beaches and museums across a wide metro area. San Diego balances parks, a historic district and coastline. San Francisco is shaped by waterfronts, neighborhoods and steep terrain. Let your interests—not a giant checklist—drive the choice.

THREE REAL CITY GUIDES

Where should you begin?

Our selection is intentionally small and researched. Compare the mood before you build a route.

Scenery is not the only difference

LA's Griffith Observatory and Santa Monica coast belong to very different parts of the region. San Diego's visitor experience can shift from gardens to coastline to historic buildings. San Francisco's waterfront and park areas also require some planning across neighborhoods. One attractive photo does not tell you how convenient a multi-stop day will be.

Pick a compact route

For first-time visitors, choose one attraction that matters most, then find a second nearby experience only after checking the map. If you want photography, factor in lighting and local conditions. If you want a museum or visitor center, check reservation rules and whether the exhibition you care about is available.

Check conditions with operators

Coastal fog, wind, steep terrain, parking constraints and event closures can influence your plans. Some outdoor spaces have no general entrance charge while museums, exhibits and parking may have fees. We link to the official operators in our city guides so you can confirm details without relying on a static price list.

A BETTER WAY TO PLAN

Quick planning notes

Los Angeles

Do not treat Griffith, Santa Monica and Getty as a compact walking route. Map transit or driving options between any two places.

San Diego

Conditions at beaches and coves can change quickly. Check local safety notices and do not assume swimming is always appropriate.

San Francisco

Hills, wind and transit transfers affect how far a route feels. Check the map and bring layers for outdoor visits.
